The Art of Hiring a Strategy Consulting Firm: Lessons from Haircut

In my recent visit to the barbershop, a seemingly mundane experience led to a profound realization of the parallels between strategic consulting and the art of haircutting.

This unexpected connection underscores the importance of tailored approaches in various service industries.

Within the realm of haircutting, two contrasting service models emerge.

1. Low-End Barbershops

At the lower end of the market, we encounter the traditional barbershop. Here, the interaction follows a predictable script.

As a patron, you are greeted with the standard questions, such as: “What are we doing today?”; “What kind of style do you want?”; “What clipper number do you usually use?”; or “How should I cut your hair today?”

Most people will reply with something unspecific, like “short on the sides, long on the top.”

Although the unspecific reply is usually not enough for the barber to go on, the barber will usually proceed with some random guesses, fill the gaps by themselves, and hope that the patron will like the result.

The result is more or less a hit-and-miss. Some patrons will be happy, but many will be disappointed.

On the other hand, some people know what they want and reply with specific answers, such as: “I like the hair to be 1.5 inches on the top, with clipper #3 on the side, and a blended natural transition between the top and side. In addition, I want a layer cut to accentuate the dimension while keeping the hair off the collar with a squared neckline. Usually, I sweep my hair to the right and style it with wax.”

The result is surer. Some patrons might be unhappy, but many will be satisfied.

As you can see, in this scenario, the barber, though skilled in their craft, operates as a mere executor of your wishes.

Their primary role is translating your instructions into a desired haircut, functioning like order takers and operators.

2. High-End Hair Designers

In stark contrast, high-end hair designers occupy the opposite end of the spectrum.

These artisans, true connoisseurs of their trade, typically don’t ask you the standard questions, such as “What do you want?”

Instead, they embark on a comprehensive analysis, taking into account your facial features, body structure, clothing choices, profession, and other relevant factors.

In the very best high-end salons, the cut comes with a complimentary consultation. These master stylists will ask you where you work, what you do for fun, where you go on the weekends, how you wear your hair, whether you put a product in it every day, and anything else you think might be helpful.

It is not uncommon to spend the first 15-30 minutes just on consultation. Essentially, they want to give you a perfect cut that will fit seamlessly into your lifestyle and reflect your personality.

From this nuanced evaluation, they craft a personalized hairstyle recommendation, precisely tailored to enhance your unique individuality.

As a result, you will likely get a new hairstyle, better than what you can think of. That is the power of true experts.

In essence, these stylists transcend the role of mere haircutters, adopting the mantle of expert advisors who provide guidance that harmonizes with your essence.

Interestingly, the analogy extends seamlessly into the domain of strategic consulting.

When you engage a consulting firm, you are presented with two fundamental paradigms reminiscent of the haircut analogy.

1. “Barber” Consulting Firms

Firstly, there are what I term “barber-style” consulting firms.

These entities operate as straightforward service providers, akin to traditional barbershops.

Clients approach them with their objectives, requirements, and desired outcomes.

In turn, these firms dutifully execute tasks in alignment with client stipulations, echoing the role of a barber in the context of haircutting.

They effectively serve as worker-operators, delivering upon your explicit instructions.

Merits of Barber-Style Consulting Firms:

  • Pro: These consulting firms can help deliver what you want in a cost-effective way.

  • Con: You need to be clear on what you need. And you ought to give them specific and explicit instructions. Otherwise, you will have a hit-and-miss result.

  • Best Used When: You know exactly what you need. You just need a doer.

2. “Designer” Consulting Firms

Conversely, “designer-style” consulting firms epitomize the consultancy world’s true experts.

They do not merely execute client requests but instead delve deeper.

A comprehensive assessment of client needs, challenges, and aspirations becomes the norm.

Leveraging their profound understanding, these consultants craft bespoke solutions that precisely align with client requirements, even if clients do not immediately recognize their suitability.

In this capacity, they assume the role of genuine designers, offering solutions that not only meet clients’ needs but also maximize efficiency and effectiveness.

Though designer-style consultants may occasionally come with a higher price tag, the return on investment can be substantially superior.

Their solutions are akin to tailor-made suits, perfectly aligned with a client’s unique dimensions.

They embody the pinnacle of expertise in problem-solving, delivering a level of service that surpasses the ordinary.

Merits of Designer-Style Consulting Firms:

  • Pro: These consulting firms find you the best solutions – sometimes for a problem you aren’t even aware of.

  • Con: The service of these consulting firms is pricier.

  • Best Used When: You don’t know exactly what you need. You need guidance from a true expert.

Which One is Better For You?

Therefore, the next time you contemplate hiring a consulting firm, consider this analogy as a guiding principle.

Determine whether your needs align with those of a “barber-style” consultant, one who adeptly executes your instructions, or a “designer-style” consultant, an expert who customizes solutions specifically for you.

Both paradigms possess their merits, and your choice should be informed by your precise needs and aspirations.
